Crosby Explorers Volunteer Opportunities

All times and dates for events are set by administrator and will always be on a pre-scheduled date. They will always be Wednesdays from 11am-1pm. If you would like to be considered for one of these volunteer opportunities, please contact Ashlea Chappell or Donna Knox so that we can get you on the schedule. If you don’t let us know we can’t plan.

On going opportunities:

  • Themed park days: Any park day is open to themed events being offered. Team building activities, crafts, lessons etc. Please ask Administrator before you go ahead and do this so we can make sure there are not conflicting things being offered. We will put you on the schedule and make sure that information is shared in the event so parents can plan accordingly.

August Opportunities:

  • Welcome Back Party
    • Greeter Responsibilities – Greet member families at check in table. Answer Questions, help them sign in and get a name tag.
    • Food table attendant – Help set up tables for food, cut up pizzas, help people know where to put items.
    • Decorations- donate time and decorations, set up photo booth etc.

Craft/Team building activity coordinator: Open to any creative impulse

October Opportunities:

  • Trunk or treat
    • Coordinator- This event is always held at Lake Houston Methodist Pumpkin Patch – Coordinate parents to set up trunks or candy buckets. Set theme, etc. Open to creative impulse.

November Opportunities:

  • Dance
    • Chaperone: Second Saturday in November. All chaperones are required to have been present to at least 10 Crosby Explorers events. This is a safety requirement more than anything else. We need to know who will be around our students. Anyone chaperoning is also committing to set up and break down of the dance. Set up typically takes place the day before the dance and break down takes place directly after the dance and goes well past midnight. We need all the hands we can get but we want to be selective in this process. All chaperones will be approved by administrator.
  • Operation Christmas Child Event-
    • Always the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Ashley Webb is our coordinator but we always need people to help coordinate efforts and help set up tables. Donation of bulk items is always a need for this event. Ashley is the best person for to answer these questions to. We need moms willing to build boxes, willing to check boxes, label boxes, tape boxes and someone willing to take the boxes to Lake Houston Methodist Church for distribution.

December Opportunities:

  • Retirement Home Caroling: Always first Wednesday in December.
    • Coordinator: We need moms willing to coordinate with Focused Care Allenbrook to figure out what we will do with or for the residents after we sing.
    • Song selection and teaching: We have erred to basic songs in the past that are easy to learn. If the person doing this would like to teach new songs to the students, the first Wednesday park day in November is a great time for this. But you must commit to teaching them that day and coordinate the kids getting to the park that would like to learn it and offer something for those who can’t make that day to learn at home.
  • Christmas Party:
    • Christmas Tree Decorator: Bring your own or tell administrator to bring hers. Set up tree, decorate tree, break down tree.
    • Craft/Team building activity coordinator: Open to creative impulse

Gifts: We need help in each group getting them settled, and helping to pass.

We need a mom who helps direct kids to leave their gift under the tree while they eat and play, then come get their gift when we pass about noon. Every child brings a gift for their age and gender and children are separated into the following circles.

*0-5 Gender neutral here.

*5-8 boys – (Some 5 year olds want to be with older kids. Some with younger. Always up to mom)

*5-8 girls – Same age rule

*8-12 boys – Same age rule for 8 year olds

*8-12 girls – Same age rule for 8 year olds

*12-18 boys– Same age rule for 12 year olds

*12-18 girls – Same age rule for 12 year olds

  • Reader or announcer – We usually read The grinch and whenever they say who we pass. If you have a better book or poem or whatever you would like to read, this is open to creative impulse. Must be loud!
  • Santa – We usually get a Santa to come – if it needs to be paid for, please let us know and we will collect a suggested donation for that. Donna usually pays for this out of pocket. In years past, we have sometimes had someone’s granddad or someone who does this.

February Opportunities:

  • Valentine’s party: Always Wednesday before Valentine’s day. This has been at the park in the past, but we have also used the community center and local churches.
    • Set up- someone with creative impulse to decorate, donate decorations, etc.
    • Food Attendant – help settle food.
    • Box coordinator – We need a box area for children to leave their boxes to be filled and candy to pass out.
    • Craft/Team building activity coordinator:  Always open to someone with creative impulse to bring cookies to decorate, a craft to do, etc.

March Opportunities:

  • Easter Party- Always Wednesday before Easter We have done many things for this in the past. Sometimes we go to Sylvan Beach. This has become a favorite! If held at the park, we turn the kids toward the soccer field while a group of moms or older teens hide the prepacked (no chocolate, it melts) eggs that parents bring. If we hold it at the beach, the kids play until it’s time.
    • Reader: We typically read the Easter Story about Holy Week, but creative impulse is given here. We only need a reader if we are at the park.
    • Egg hider Coordinator: Get a group of moms and teens to hide eggs.
    • Liner-upper: Call for the kids to line up, tell kids when to go, etc. We always give 0-5’s a chance to go before the older kids. Make sure they are wearing shoes since last year we had a sticker issue.

April Opportunities:

  • Fair – We hold a fair in April – Science, History, literature, entrepreneur. Theme to be set by administrator. But once the theme is set, creative impulse given to whoever wants to run it. We have done it at the community center, local churches, libraries, etc.
  • Field Day:
    • Coordinator: Coordinate events (Crosby Explorers has a ton of items in storage for this.) Creative impulse granted.
